Malaysia’s intellectual property system is managed by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), which operates under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. Malaysia’s intellectual property protection covers various aspects including patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyrights, geographical indications, and layout-designs (topographies) of integrated circuits
As an important member of the international intellectual property protection system, Malaysia is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and a signatory to the Paris Convention and the Berne Convention. These conventions respectively govern the protection of industrial property and literary and artistic works. Additionally, Malaysia is a signatory to the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which is overseen by the World Trade Organization (WTO), further ensuring international protection of intellectual property

Malaysia provides strong intellectual property protection for both local and foreign investors. Its intellectual property laws meet international standards and are subject to regular reviews by the TRIPS Council to ensure they remain among global best practices
As part of a broader strategy to enhance the competitiveness of local SMEs, the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office (MyIPO) actively collaborates with stakeholders and financial institutions to explore new financing channels. Specifically, by allowing SMEs to use their intellectual property as collateral for loans, MyIPO provides more financial and loan options. This approach helps expand financing choices for SMEs and boosts their competitiveness in the market
To further enhance the intellectual property ecosystem, MyIPO has launched a pilot platform called the “Intellectual Property Market.” This platform aims to increase the visibility and accessibility of intellectual property holders, providing broader market opportunities for those wishing to license or sell their rights. Through this market mechanism, MyIPO hopes to promote a healthy supply and demand relationship for intellectual property and encourage ongoing investment and innovation in intellectual property and other intangible assets
